Culture Yourself: Japan's Golden Week
Apr,29,2013
by+Staff

The end of April and the beginning of May is a very special time in Japan, known as Golden Week. During this particular week, four holidays (Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day, and Children’s Day) occur back-to-back in what has got to be the worst time to hit the grocery store ever. The Bartkira Project: Where The Simpsons Meets Akira
Apr,24,2013
by:+Staff

In its twenty-four years on the air, FOX's iconic animated series The Simpsons has covered quite a few storylines and tropes. In fact, they've famously done so many stories that long-running rival, South Park, devoted an episode to the fact entitled "Simpsons Already Did It." But one thing that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and the rest of Springfield's colorful cast of characters haven't done is starred in a recreation of Katsuhiro Otomo's landmark manga series Akira. Fortunately, the Internet is one giant wish fulfillment machine and two intrepid artists, Ryan Humphrey and James Harvey, are spearheading the cleverly titled Bartkira Project, a crowdsourced attempt to transform all six volumes of Otomo's masterpiece into a Simpsonified remake. Bart as Kaneda? Milhouse as Tetsuo? This might just be the rare case in which The Simpsons didn't do it first.
