GRIMES, Iowa, March 28, 2012 – Anime producer and distributor Right Stuf, Inc. and its Nozomi Entertainment division are pleased to announce the DIRTY PAIR FLASH DVD Collection will be available on July 10, 2012.

Dirty Pair Flash is a 1990s reimagining of the long-running sci-fi franchise and stars younger incarnations of Trouble Consultants Kei and Yuri. The Dirty Pair’s literary adventures – written by Haruka Takachiho (creator of Crusher Joe) and illustrated by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (character design for Mobile Suit Gundam, Gundam Unicorn) – have won two Seiun Awards for science fiction and inspired an array of media, including anime, radio series and English-language comics. The first two novels, The Great Adventure of the Dirty Pair and The Dirty Pair Strike Again, are published for English-speaking audiences by Dark Horse.

The original Dirty Pair TV series and OVA series are now available as DVD sets, with remastered video, from Right Stuf’s Nozomi Entertainment. Monsters, Maniacs, and a little bit Moore

Monsters, Maniacs, and a little bit Moore
By Howard Lee
More than Just Comics

Alan Moore’s Watchmen graphic novel is now a major motion picture sans Alan Moore’s name on the credits. But that is typical Alan Moore when it comes to turning his stories into movies. But I remember a time when Alan was more that happy to lend his name to the media. In the late 80’s Alan Moore hosted a special about himself called “Monsters, Maniacs, and Moore” on British TV Channel Four where Alan interviewed a special guest namely Alan Moore. This is not a review of that program but my own memories of meeting Alan Moore in London in 1984 and working with him on a special project to benefit AIDS research. That’s why I called this “Monsters, Maniacs, and a little bit Moore”.

As I mentioned I first met Alan Moore at a comic book convention in London in 1984 at the time Alan was not the “comic god” he is now, but he was definitely on his way. I was at the convention when three people walked up to my table. Now normally I don’t give people a second look unless at the time they are buying from me. (Back then I was a money grubber I mellowed a bit) Two of the people seemed like ordinary comic collectors a man and a woman. But the second man was dressed to attract attention with an all white suit top hat, cane, long hair and beard, he was hard to miss.

I don’t know why he came over to my table, maybe because I was just as unusual as he was being an African-American comic dealer from Chicago at a London comic con. So Alan walks over to my table and starts to look over my books. “Do you have American Flagg” he asked. “Yes, I do under my table I was saving them to put out later today”. “I know how hard they are to get here”. I said “Yes they are, can you get more” He said. “Yes, I can let me have your name, I can send you issues from the States”. I looked at the card and saw the name Alan Moore Comic Writer. “Alan Moore, you write ‘Swamp Thing’ right?”. “Yes that’s me” He said. “You know ‘Swamp Thing’ is a big seller in my shop in Chicago” “So what are you working on now?” I asked. “Well, I am writing some new Swamp Thing stories, a couple D.R. and Quench for 2000 AD and new stories Miracle Man, and V for Vendetta”. “But mostly I am working with other artist and writers on a book to help AIDS awareness”. “If there is anyway I can help let me know, I would be glad to” I said. “Ok let’s talk later”. Then Allan and crew moved to the next table.

After I got back to my shop I called Alan at home. “Alan I have an idea for you, I was thinking about what you said about your AIDS awareness book”. “What is it going to be called” I said. “Strip AIDS the book is artwork done by top comic and writers, all the profits are going to AIDS research and prevention” “So what’s your idea?” he said. “Well, I am having an Underground Comic Book Party at my store this week. With underground comic artist Jay Lynch, Kim Deitch, Skip Williamson, Dan Clouse, and Monty Beaucamp the publisher of “Blab”. I said “That’s great, I would love to meet those guys I have a lot of their work” “You know I used to draw underground comics, “I did a version of Fat Freddy’s Cat” he continued “I have to send you some, Did you contact Robert Crumb about this?”. “Yes I did but, he did not want to come, but he does support what we are doing”. I said. “What about you Alan do you want to come? I asked. “I can’t, I am working on two new stories for “Swamp Thing” and “Miracle man”. “But do you think the guys would send me some artwork from the party for the Strip AIDS book? He said. “I am sure they will, I will make it part of the party”. “What about you are you going to do some artwork? I asked. “I am thinking about it”. He said. “Ok Alan, I will call you after the party to let you know who came”. Then I ended the call.

On the day of the Underground party we had artists Jay Lynch, Dan Clouse, Kim Dietch, Fred Williamson, Monty Beaupcamp, and surprise guest Del Close all at my store for a night of celebration of Underground comics. During the party I told them about my conversation with Alan and he was a fan of their work. Some of them like Jay Lynch did not know much about Alan or his work so I show them copies of Swamp Thing written by Alan Moore. But Dan Clouse of artist and writer of Lloyd Llewellyn did read Alan work and was surprise that Alan read his work. [Hey, it was the 1984 Alan wasn’t that well known then] I along with Monty Beaupcamp of Blab magazine got the entire artist together and we did a montage of all of their most famous characters, but left the middle spot open for Alan’s contribution. Then we all took a photo for Alan to send him with the artwork.

The next day I called Alan and told him what happened at the party and about the artwork that was done by the underground artist. “Well, Alan it’s up to you now you are my last guest of the Underground comics’ party”. “I am sending you the montage” I said. “So can we use the artwork in the Strip AIDS book?” Alan asked. “Yes, you can just send me some copies of the book when it is done so I can give them to the artist at the party.

About a month later I got a package from Alan inside was copies of the completed artwork with Alan’s Maxwell's Magic Cat meekly standing in the center of the with an autograph book raised up toward the other underground characters with the caption “”I you guys older stuff”. So I got into touch with the other artist and let them know that Alan completed the artwork and sent them all signed copies to keep. Here is where is where they surprised me they told me to keep all the copies as souvenirs of the Underground comics party. Then several months later the Strip AIDS book came out with artwork from the Underground party as part of the book. Even though I don’t have the artwork any more I am still proud of my meeting and working with Alan Moore, the underground artist, and the project we worked on to help bring awareness about the problem of AIDS all over the world.

Manga Book Review: Bat-manga

Manga Book Review: Bat-manga
By Chip Kidd, Geoff Spear, and Saul Ferris
Manga Stories/Artwork by Jiro Kuwata
Reviewed by Howard Lee
Tomatovision TV

It seems like Batman is every where these days. We see the Dark Knight at the movies making over $1 billion dollars world wide and the Batman TV show is being aired some where in the world (We get reruns here in Chicago) and now the anime version of Batman with the release of Gotham Knights. It’s this part of the Batman legend that writers have explored in their new book Batmanga. It’s a look at Batman’s influence on manga during the 60’s. That brings us back to the Batman TV series of the 60’s. I was one of those youngsters who watched Batman and got caught up in Bat mania a condition I still have today little did I know that in Japan Bat mania was just as strong.

Now thanks to writers they have discovered Batman manga from the 60’s that has not been seen in Japan or the U.S. in over 40 years they have put together new material that adds to the Batman lore. Batmanga is a retelling of three Batman stories from the late 50’s and early 60’s from Batman and Detective comics plus one new story never before seen in the U.S. they are all drawn in the manga style by Jiro Kuwata who is the creator of 8th Man.

In the Japanese style reading from left to right there are six stores featured in Batmanga the first of these stories Batman fights the second Clay face Matt Hagen renamed Ferris. Just as in the U.S. story Ferris escapes from prison and discovers a mysterious pool that gives him shape shifting powers. He uses to steal jewels and paintings and just like the U.S. story he is captured by Batman and Robin and sent back to prison.

In the second story Lord Death has no counterpart in the U.S. that I know of its totally original. This story focuses more on Bruce Wayne then Batman. Lord Death is a criminal that is killed by Batman during a robbery and is buried. So the case should be over right? Wrong Lord Death begins to haunt the dreams of Bruce Wayne to the point of madness. Then Lord Death returns from the dead and begins his reign of crime all over again. Just as before Batman sees Lord Death killed but again he rises from the dead. What is his secret of how he can return from the dead Batman must find out soon to save his own sanity? This story alone is well worth getting the Batmanga book.

In the third story Batman must fight the villain called Weather Wizard Go-Go who has the power with his weather rod. He is intent on destroying all of Gotham City. But mainly Batman and another hero known as the Magician he does this by freezing him to death.
Fans of the Flash comics will not doubt think Weather Wizard from the Flash and how tried to use the weather to kill him. Same thing happens in this story Batman defeats Weather Wizard Go-Go by using the weather against him.

In the fourth story Batman must battle with the evil scientist Dr. Denton who lost his face due to an accident of his making. Now he is going after Batman to destroy Batman face. This put both men on a course that can only leads to the destruction of one. Like the Lord Death story I have not seen any U.S. counterpart for this story.

In the fifth story revolves around an experiment gone wrong. A scientist accidentally switched his brain with a gorilla. The gorilla has a hatred of mankind now with the intelligence of the scientist he goes on a reign of terror through the city. Batman must stop but only by going through the same procedure the scientist when through to defeat the gorilla. Many old school DC fans will see this story as a cross between Grood and Congorilla.

In the final story is about a government official that is undergoing a change that makes him evolves into a future version of man. He is afraid that his future self might see mankind as weak and inferior so he ask a group of scientist to shoot him into space if this happens. As the official continues to evolve his fears come to light he become a threat. Now it up to Batman and Robin to stop him, but can Batman break his code against killing to save the world? There is another part to this story the official has a daughter with the same gene will a risky operation save her from the same fate as her father? You will have to read Batmanga to find out.

The stories in Batmanga are taken from the time when Batman fought strange villains when to outer space and travel to strange dimensions to fight crime. Granted they are not the stories Batman fans are used to now but they are a lot of fun to read. Batmanga has another special surprise for Batman collectors. In between the stories are full color photos of Batman toys, books and games that came out in Japan in the 60’s. I was thrilled to see many of the Batman robots, planes, and of course Bat mobiles that were produced in Japan. As a toy collector for over 30 years and a Batman fan for over 40 years this section alone was worth the price of the book. But for every up there is a down my only complaint or observation is the artwork the artist is the creator of 8th man wait before you say “Howard 8th man is a manga and anime classic character” I know I like 8th man I have him as one of my avatars. But that’s the point Jiro Kuwata drew Batman alter ego Bruce Wayne to look like 8th man so sometimes I thought I was reading 8th man instead of Batman. Other than that Batmanga should definitely be added to any collector of Batman, manga, and toys. Batmanga spreads its wings over all three.

Personal Notes:

Reading Batmanga brings back memories of another Batman book called “Batmania in the Netherlands” by Klaus Dejirker in the 80’s I did research on that book that like Batmanga took a look at Batman’s effects on the Netherlands in the 60’s. Two things we founded out was that the Batman movie in the 60’s was so popular that kids would not go to school but to the movie so the Batman movie would not play until after school was out. Another was the beer company Amstel had an unusual promotion the Batman beer mask that could only be gotten if you sent in 5 Amstel beer labels. I could just see some parent being ask by his child “Dad drink more beer so I can get my Batman mask”. That’s wild unfortunately the Batmania book never made it to the U.S. that’s a shame. Who knows one day some one will write a book called “Batmania around the World”

This month at More Than Just Comics and TFAW DC Launches Six Series With The New 52 Second Wave

DC took the comic book industry by storm in September 2011 with The New 52, when they relaunched their entire line of books with #1 issues. In May, they'll be launching six new series with The New 52 Second Wave!

DC's Second Wave includes hotly anticipated titles like Grant Morrison's Batman Incorporated, with artist Chris Burnham, plus Dial H, by fantasy author China MiƩville and Mateus Santoluoco, Earth 2, by James Robinson and Nicola Scott, World's Finest, by Paul Levitz, George Perez, and Kevin Maguire, The Ravagers, by Howard Mackie and Ian Churchill, and G.I. Combat, by J.T. Krul and Ariel Olivetti. This is a great opportunity to get your visitors re-engaged in DC's The New 52 and introduce them to brand-new titles they'll want to order every month!

Boba Fett Is Dead in Star Wars: Blood Ties This April

The news spreads from one end of the galaxy to the other like wildfire: Boba Fett, the galaxy's most feared bounty hunter, is dead. But when members of the team that killed Fett are themselves picked off one by one, Connor Freeman--the son of one of Jango Fett's clones--gets pulled into the action in a most unexpected way!

Star Wars: Blood Ties comes back in a big way this April when Tom Taylor (Star Wars Adventures, Star Wars: Invasion) and Chris Scalf (Star Wars: Invasion, Godzilla Legends) begin their four-issue miniseries. Make sure to let your visitors know!

Then in May, a five-issue Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison miniseries kicks off. Plus, you'll want to bring your visitors up to date on current Star Wars series. We have new issues of Dawn of the Jedi, Knights of the Old Republic - War, Agent of the Empire, Dark Times, and Crimson Empire III available for pre-order at TFAW!
