Mar,29,2013
by:+Staff

Just because we spend most of our waking hours obsessively consuming anime, manga and all manner of Asian pop culture doesn't mean we aren't pretty excited to see The Rock blow things up in GI Joe: Retaliation. But why should the average otaku care about the film? Well, apart from one seriously stunning cliffside ninja fight (worth the price of admission alone), you should know that Korean superstar Byung-Hun Lee is reprising his role as Storm Shadow, Cobra's resident badass ninja. Being that this is one of Lee's first big breakthrough roles in the US market, we wanted to catch up with the abdominal Adonis and, thankfully, he obliged.

Course of the Force, Episode II: The Race Returns
Mar,27,2013
by+ Staff

In a year marred by sports scandals, one event stood out among the rest as a shining beacon of athleticism, altruism and Admiral Akbar appreciation. What event, you ask? Did you see Nerdist's Chris Hardwick's announcement last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon or have you been living under a rock in a galaxy far, far away? We are, of course, talking about Course of the Force, Nerdist and Lucasfilm's first annual charity lightsaber relay race benefiting the Make-a-Wish Foundation that stretched down the Pacific Coast from Santa Monica Pier to the gates of Comic-Con International. Much like Star Wars itself, the event is returning (second time's the charm - Empire Strikes Back, anyone?) on a much grander scale, kicking off at the famed Skywalker Ranch to make the proverbial Kessel Run down the California coast to San Diego to kick off Comic-Con in style. No Jedi mind tricks - this is going to be 500 miles of pure, unadulterated fun.

Jerry Eisenberg's Flying Hippo
Mar,21,2013
By:+ Michael Mallory

Like all professional toonheads, I’m sometimes asked to identify my favorite cartoon character. More specifically, those who know I tend to specialize in the history of Hanna-Barbera often want me to pinpoint my favorite H-B character. I usually reply with a laundry list of characters, saying that there is not any one I can pick as my absolute favorite. That said, however, there is one character and one show that captivated my eight-old-mind more than any other: Peter Potamus.
Why Peter Potamus? I can’t really say. Maybe it was that great balloon ship he flew around on, or his “Hurricane Hippo Holler,” borrowed from comedian Joe E. Brown. But even though he never made H-B’s A-list (though he was popular enough to inspire a Purex bubble-bath toy), I always had a fondness for Peter. That’s why, in 1997, I was delighted to meet the man behind the hippo, veteran layout artist and character designer Jerry Eisenberg. At the time we spoke, I hadn’t even known that, but Jerry––who in addition to being a hugely talented artist is a very funny man––filled me in:

Bento Box: Old Teachers, New Features and Hairy Creatures
Mar,21,2013
by+Staff

Hot for Teacher - Fans of everyone's favorite sleazeball teacher rejoice! Live-action Great Teacher Onizuka is back with a brand new two-hour special due to air on April 2nd. Exile pop star Akira is set to reprise the role of the titular Onizuka, a man with a criminal past who spends his days as a perverted, but dedicated high school teacher. The two-hour show will take place at the graduation of Onizuka's class and deal with the students worries about the future, namely college (and all the stress and beer funneling that goes with it). Not only will Akira star in the highly anticipated adaptation, but Exile will also perform the show's theme song “24karats Tribe of Gold”. This is the first follow-up to the eleven episode series that ran in September of last year. If you've read the tremendously popular manga or seen the anime, you know that viewers are in store for a GTO-style slightly creepy, but plenty hilarious treat.

Marvel Movie Shocker--Robert Redford in Talks for 'Captain America' Sequel
Mar,25,2013
by:+Staff

Robert Redford, the founder of the Sundance Movie Festival and the Godfather of American independent cinema, is in talks for a role in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The typically authoritative Deadline site is reporting the news that comes as a shock to many, though considering the talents that Marvel Studios has been able to attract for it films, such as nabbing Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley to play The Mandarin in Iron Man 3, it is clear that any "stigma" attached to appearing in a comic book movie appears to be dissipating quickly.

DreamWorks' Shrewd Croods Looks Good at No. 1
Mar,25,2013
By:+ Ramin Zahed

After months of anticipation, DreamWorks watchers can sigh in relief this weekend as the studio’s first animated feature of 2013 proved to be a solid moneymaker at the box office. Directed by Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, the caveman family comedy brought in an estimated $44.7 million weekend. After the disappointing results of the under-performing Rise of the Guardians last November, the studio needs a big hit to keep its share prices solid on Wall Street. The movie, which was made for about $135 million, is the first of the studio’s projects to be released by 20th Century Fox (after the relationship with Paramount ended in 2012). Although the pic received only a 64% rating on rottentomatoes.com, it received a solid A CinemaScore from audiences.

So You Want to Be a Mangaka?
Mar,25,2013
by:+Staff

There's a moment in the life of every diehard manga fan where they sit back and think, “Hey... I could do this!” While for most it's just a fleeting thought, there are plenty of aspiring manga creators (or a mangaka as they're referred to in Japan) looking to get into the industry at any level. Where do you start? Here's a handy primer for any aspiring Tezukas out there looking to make their name in the world of funny looking funnybooks.
Do Your Homework - If one wants to make films, one watches films. The same goes for music. This rule holds fast for manga as well. Want to write manga? Better get used to reading a lot of it, first. There are some nearly indefinable differences between manga and the Western-style comics most of us have been raised on, so there is no better way to familiarize yourself with the genre then by immersing yourself in it. Pick up on the small subtleties and aspects of story and art specific to manga and you'll be able to use this knowledge in your own work. Try to vary the genres of what you're reading because well rounded otaku make for the best mangaka. There are thousands of titles to draw inspiration from and enjoy, and a wide array of genres in which to get involved. Take your time, see what’s out there and what appeals to the little mangaka that lives inside of you.
