'Comic Book People: Photographs from the 1970s and 1980s'

Jackie Estrada, who has been involved in photography and comics for over 40 years, will release Comic Book People: Photographs from the 1970s and 1980s, a photography book featuring comic creators and other comic industry veterans from the 1970s and 1980s.
Currently close to its goal on Kickstarter, the book will be released to the trade in September. Estrada plans to solicit through Diamond, and will be using Atlas/Bookmasters for distribution to the book trade. Tentative MSRP will be $34.95.

‘Hot in Cleveland’ Gets Animated This Season

TV Land has announced that the fifth season of its hit original sitcom Hot in Cleveland will boast an animated episode (titled, surprise, “The Animated Episode”). Titmouse, Inc. will be tackling the tooned-out version of the show, which stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White. An exact airdate is to be announced, but the new season of Cleveland kicks off on Wednesday, March 26 at 10 p.m.

Anime action film Tiger & Bunny: The Movie — The Rising will come in March to the United States via a series of special theatrical screenings courtesy of VIZ Media and Eleven Arts.
Tiger & Bunny: The Movie — The Rising is the second feature to come from the popular Japanese superhero anime TV series. Premiering in Japan in February, the film will play theatrical dates starting March 14 in 20 cities throughout North American, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle. When it comes to Saturday Morning action no one was better than Hanna-Barbera Superheroes in the 60's were the best anywhere my favorite was "Space Ghost Council of Doom" that featured all the H-B superheroes from Shazzan to the Heculoids, that was only the start H-B's action heroes included Birdman and The Galaxy trio or as I called them the H-B version of the Fantastic Four, another great H-B show from the Marvel series and who could forget The Impossibles and Frankenstein Jr. I could go on. Cartoon Network Pulls Controversial ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Cover

Cartoon Network has told ICv2 that it is pulling the controversial The Powerpuff Girls #6 variant cover by artist Mimi Yoon that was supposed to ship from IDW in February. The Cartoon Network’s action comes after complaints by comic book retailer Dennis Barger Jr. on Facebook stirred a controversy. The anime style cover image depicts the Powerpuff Girls as sexy teens decked out in skintight mini-skirted uniforms and white stockings.

Trailer Unveils Jolie as ‘Maleficent’

Disney has released a teaser trailer for Maleficent, a live-action reimagining of Sleeping Beauty told from the point of view of that story’s antagonist. The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora and Sharlto Copley as King Stefan. The movie is directed by Robert Stromberg from a script by animation veterans Paul Dini and Linda Woolverton. Longtime Disney animation producer Don Hahn is producing with Joe Roth.

'Marvel's Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher'

Marvel has released a trailer for the OVA Marvel’s Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher, which will release March 25th. The OVA is produced by Marvel, Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) Inc. and anime powerhouse Madhouse, which previously produced anime featuring Marvel characters (see "'Wolverine,' 'Iron Man' Anime").
Black Widow is voiced by Jennifer Carpenter, and the Punisher by Brian Bloom. Iron Man Thor, Hulk, and the rest of the Avengers, collaborate with the title characters in a mission to stop Leviathan, a global terrorist organization that plans to sell stolen S.H.I.E.L.D. technology to the highest bidder.

What is it about dinosaurs and animation?
One could argue that animation is the perfect method of bringing them to life onscreen, which is why the love affair between animators and the long-extinct creatures of wonder has gone on now for a century.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Gertie the Dinosaur, a 12-minute short created by newspaper cartoonist Winsor McCay. Gertie and Winsor took their act on the road, appearing in Vaudeville venues, and amazing audiences with their interaction. Some years later, effects animators Willis O’Brien and his protégé Ray Harryhausen created state-of-the-art stop-motion dinosaurs for live action films, work that not only thrilled moviegoers, but even inspired scientists. Back in 2002, Ray Harryhausen remarked to me, “Our pictures have affected the audience in a very positive way, which, if I may say so, is more than you can say about some films today.” He elaborated:

Animation has released a trailer for Son of Batman, the next direct-to-video animated feature in the popular series of animated adaptations of DC Comics sagas that are targeted at older viewers and contain more violence and mature themes than typical Saturday morning superhero programming aimed at kids.

‘Heavy Metal’ Under New Ownership

Heavy Metal has a new owner that’s looking to expand the classic adult comics magazine into features, TV and other genres. According to a report in Variety, digital and music industry veteran David Boxenbaum and film producer Jeff Krelitz bought the magazine from publisher Kevin Eastman for an undisclosed sum raised in private equity.
Eastman, who co-created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and has been the publisher and owner of the magazine since 1991, will stay on as publisher and a minority investor.

Sif to Appear in 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

While ABC President Pat Lee, who was speaking to the Television Critics Association, stopped short of announcing that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be back for a second season, he did mention that actress Jamie Alexander, who plays the Asgardian warrior Sif in the Thor movies, will make an appearance in the 15th episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is likely to air in February, and that Alexander’s role will not be a mere cameo, but will be "integral" to the episode.
