Villain Featured in New 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Trailer

The newly released International Trailer for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness puts a bit of the spotlight on Benedict Cumberbatch, the hot young actor who plays the BBC’s modern Sherlock Holmes and a villain in the new Trek film. In addition to a potent display of Cumberbatch's megalomanical evil, this full 2 minute and 15 second trailer also provides a shot of Alice Eve in a bikini that will definitely spike the interest of male Star Trek fans.

Fancy Fridays: Otakuworthy Officewear
Mar,22,2013
By:+Staff
Being an anime fan with a 9-to-5 job can be difficult for those of us who want to flaunt our fandom. Not all of us are lucky enough to work in a super cool San Francisco-area start-up where you can wear sandals, tattoos and graphic tees to work. So, how can the rest of us wear our otaku allegiance on our sleeves? Easy - just snag some of this office-ready otaku attire and look like a boss (while you talk to your boss).
Suit Yourself - Ah, the suit: the quintessential piece of clothing for the modern office and possibly the most stuffy. Surely, there isn't an alternative for anime fans, right? Wrong! Enter the Itasuutsu Project (lit. "painful suits), a new line of suits featuring some of your favorite anime characters. While they offer outfits that have louder designs and anime characters emblazoned on the outside of the suit, we prefer their subtler offerings which feature characters on the interior lining. Now you can stay late to bang out those TPS reports with a tsundere surprise to keep you company!

Say It Isn't So Dept.: 'Escape From New York' Trilogy
Mar,20,2013
by:+Staff
Like a morbidly obese giant trapped in a warehouse full of French fries, Hollywood appears to be constitutionally unable to wean itself from its unvarying diet of more and more remakes. The latest example of this constant gutting of its cinematic past is the announced attention of producer Joel Silver to remake John Carpenter’s 1981 classic Escape From New York. This is a very bad idea on several fronts, the most obvious of which is that Carpenter’s film still holds up well and is unlikely to be improved by today’s increasingly ubiquitous computer effects. Most importantly Kurt Russell’s character-defining portrayal of Snake Plissken is so iconic that we should be spared having to sit through some contemporary thespian’s attempt to duplicate it.

Goofy Gadgets: Japan's Weirdest Gear
Mar,20,2013
by:+Staff
While Japan is responsible for many conventional technical marvels that we can find in our living rooms - PS3 and, presumably, your HD TV, anyone? - they also have quite a few eyebrow-raising inventions that didn't make it to our shores. Today, we're bringing four of the weirdest ones to your attention.
Tablet Tech - How many times have you been lying in bed and holding up your iPad using your own two arms like a total sap? Well, those days are numbered thanks to a nifty tablet stand from ASCII Store that can be positioned to conveniently dangle right above your pillow so you can stream anime without lifting a finger. Okay, you still need to lift your finger to play the episode, but you get it. Consisting of a tablet stand, a flexible neck and baseplate, the stand provides a relatively hands-free experience for the incorrigibly lazy or those who genuinely need the assistance. We're just worried that this means we're one step away from looking like the humans in Wall-E.

Animated People: Enzo D'Alò
Feb,12,2013
By:+Ramin Zahed
Although Italian author Carlo Collodi wrote his hugely influential children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio in 1883, many people remember Walt Disney’s 1940 animated feature when they recall the tale of the wooden boy. This year, thanks to the hard work of Italian director Enzo D’Alò and his talented team of artists at Cometa Film (Italy), 2d3D (France), Walking the Dog (Belgium) and Iris Productions (Ireland), animation lovers are treated to a lovely new adaptation, which is much more faithful to Collodi’s original vision. We recently had the chance to chat with D’Alò about his new feature, which opens in Italy later this month and is featured at Cartoon Movie in March:

Mar,19,2013
by:+Staff
Just one day after the release of three enigmatic teasers (see "Teasers for New Brian K. Vaughan, Marcos Martin Comic"), comes the announcement that the first 32-page installment of the 10-issue, old-school-length maxiseries The Private Eye is available for downloading at PanelSyndicate.com where it is can be purchased at a Radiohead-like "Name Your Own Price" in a number of DRM-free formats including CBR, CBZ and PDF. Getting rid of the DRM elements should be a hit with fans since it makes the download much easier for consumers to collect and use, but it also opens the door to "free" distribution by second parties that could quickly erode revenues.

New 'Wonder Woman' Documentary on PBS
Mar,18,2013
By:+Staff
Tax Day may provide some unlikely compensations for pop culture mavens this year including the airing of the documentary Wonder Women!: The Untold Story of American Superheroines on April 15th at 10pm (ET, PT) on PBS’s Independent Lens series.
While Wonder Woman is not the sole focus of this documentary directed by Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, it’s clear from the trailer (and the film’s Website) that the director examines the career of the Amazon warrior from her original creator, the fascinating proto-feminist (and bondage lover) William Moulton Marston to the introduction of Gail Simone, who has had the longest run of any female creator on the book (Simone was not, as is often reported erroneously, the first female to write for the character since she was preceded by Mindy Newell, Trina Robbins and Jodi Picoult).
