Tokyopop WTFriday: Cats + Sushi = Adorable
May,10,2013
by+Staff
The Internet's love affair with all things feline-related is a well-documented phenomenon, ranging from YouTube sensations like Stalking Cat and Nyan Cat to the meteoric rise of Grumpy Cat to Japan's fabled cat cafes. However, one Japanese company is tapping into the Internet phenomenon in a rather unique way by combining kitties with one of Japan's most recognizable dishes - sushi! Now before you start contacting PETA about misconduct, you should know that no cats were harmed in the making of nekozushi ("cat sushi"); in fact, they're not edible at all (well, technically, they are, but then again, anything is an edible arrangement if you want it bad enough). Rather, these aww-inspiring animals are part of a surreal, but supremely kawaii photo series that's blowing up across the web.

Tokopop The New Cult Classics: 5 Films You Need to See
May,08,2013
by+Staff
It was recently announced that Versus, director Ryuhei Kitamura's action-packed gorefest that has found a large underground following since its release in 2000, will be getting a sequel. Some fans were thrilled; others believed a sequel unnecessary. Whichever side of the argument you fall on, here are five newer members of the Japanese cult canon that you absolutely must see!
Paprika – An animated feature with more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at, the film was reportedly one of the influences of the box office smash Inception. The film was directed (and co-written) by the late Satoshi Kon of Perfect Blue fame. A must-see for anime fans everywhere, this film blurs the lines between dream and reality in visually mindboggling ways. If nothing else, it will make you think. (And be confused. It’s okay to be totally confused.)

May,07,2013

Visual effects icon Ray Harryhausen, whose stop-motion creations brought many monsters alive in movies such as Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans, died on Tuesday morning (May 7) at age 92. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he lived in the U.K. for several decades with his wife Diana.

‘Unbound,’ ‘Rabbi’s Cat’ Pounce on DVD Shelves
May,06,2013
by:+Mercedes Milligan
Two very different but equally worthy animated efforts are topping the Animag home entertainment shopping list this week. First, for comic-book fans, the 16th film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line Superman: Unbound brings the 2008 Brainiac story arc to life thanks to Warner Bros. Animation and director James Tucker.
Based on the comics written by Geoff Johns and adapted by Bob Goodman, the 75-minute 2D flick sends the Man of Steel (voiced by Matt Bomer) and his unpredictable cousin Supergirl (Molly Quinn) facing off with ruthless villain Brainiac (John Noble), who has taken and miniaturized Krypton’s capital city of Kandor.
The DVD version ($19.98) comes with a preview of the next DCU film, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. The Blu-ray ($24.98) tacks on the Brainiac: Technology and Terror featurette, four DC toons from the vault, and a digital comic excerpt from the graphic novel. Both are available May 7 from Warner Home.
